Speaker icon greyed out (and no audio) when casting mkv files
« on: August 01, 2014, 10:56:20 AM »
After downloading some (but not all) mkv movie files which all play fine locally on the PC, their audio will not cast. The speaker icon shows that the audio is muted. I usually can overcome this by converting them to another filetype (eg. MP4) which will then cast fine.

I do power the Chromecast from the power adapter.

Is there a way to get these to play with having to convert them? Is there a missing codec? I have even seen postings that suggest changing the PC's time zone may work, but that seems crazy.

Thanks,
Ian

Chromecast has limitation in the input formats. Only video containers MP4 and WebM encoded with Video codecs H.264 High Profile Level 4.1, 4.2 and 5, VP8 and audio codecs HE-AAC, LC-AAC, CELT/Opus, MP3, Vorbis are compatible with Chromecast.

As we all know, WebM is based on MKV format, so the two formats are similar in many ways. But a lot of people meet with difficulties: either can't cast MKV to TV or successfully send MKV to TV but without sound or video. Though MKV has similarity with WebM, they are still not the same. When MKV contains audio codecs like DTS or AC3, you can't send these files to TV though Chromecast or just get the video without audio.

In this case, you have to convert MKV files to Chromecast recognized formats.

Easiest way is to setup a Plex server, that'll play everything you can throw at it, I have a Windows 7 pc with a 1TB drive full of media, the Android Plex app which I play media from thePlex server on, and cast that to my chromecast. I have a Roku 3 in the living room and my Chromecast in the bedroom, i can now watch 1080p movies in bed without having to buy another Roku!
