Chromecast doesn't support video files
« on: December 16, 2013, 01:53:34 PM »
Hello everyone!

One week ago, I decided to buy Avia, one of the recent apps able to cast local videos from my different nexus devices to Google Chromecast. I have to say that, despite sometimes it doesn't load videos properly, the application works correctly.

So I also decided it was time to use another app, in this case 'series.ly' which it is an app for streaming and downloading series and movies. So when I try to stream a movie to chromecast through Avia, it pop ups a warning message that says: "THE CHROMECAST DOES NOT CURRENTLY SUPPORT THIS VIDEO FORMAT". So I tried to download the file, and same result. Besides, I tried to change the format file but same error message.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Serioucm,  In order to use Chromecast you must use a Chromecast compatible app.  They are still adding new ones all the time as they continue to build out the Chromcast ecosystem but Series.ly isn't one of them...yet.  Here is the complete list of Chromecast supported Apps.

I understand that, but I was trying to load a video through the app avia, which it IS compatible with chrome cast. Anyway, maybe I will have to wait till Google release the SDK....

Ah yes, my bad.  Avia should work.  Perhaps it is something to do with series.ly though being not compatible.  Could it be streaming the video in a format that's not supported?

Go with Plex. It's far better than Avia.

Although Chromecast can handle various video types such as WebM, MP4, MPEG and MKV, if your video files are rejected by Chromecat, what you can do is to encode videos to MP4 for Chromecast  and then use the Chromecast's local playback workaround to stream the movies to Chromecast.
