Rdio, Vudu, Crackle and JW Player All Add Chromecast Support
« on: April 03, 2014, 05:10:40 PM »

The juggernaut of Chromecast compatible apps kept growing this week as we saw the introduction of Rdio, Vudu, Crackle and JW Player to the list of apps and service adding support.   One interesting note about these latest editions is that they show that Google will not hinder rival or competing content providers from providing official support for the Chromecast device. Rdio provides a music streaming service for $10/month that could be seen as a possible rival to Google's own Play Music service and Vudu, Crackle and JW Player all add additional video content that could conceivably be seen as a rival to Google Play Movies and TV.  This makes us think that Google is more interested in the wide adoption of the Chromecast device and the happiness of users than just their own bottom line.  Of course it also raises the question of just what the monetization strategy of the Chromecast dongle is since the $35 price probably doesn't include a whole lot of profit for the company.  Perhaps the idea is that the more users there are the more will discover the Google Play Services and Store in the long run.  Sounds good to us.
